League Leverages Young CU Professionals to Bring Fin Ed to Local Communities Through NCUF Biz Kid$ Grant

The League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) held a one-day workshop this summer to familiarize young professionals attending this year’s Southeast Credit Union Conference and Exposition (SCUCE) with financial education outreach tactics through Biz Kid$, an Emmy Award-winning financial education program for kids. This event built upon LSCU’s separate Biz Kid$ two-day Young Professionals Workshop held late last year. As a result of these workshops, multiple attendees have since taken up the cause to bring financial education to 6th-8th graders throughout Florida and Alabama school districts.

“We are very pleased with the enthusiasm for delivering financial education programs exhibited by our LSCU Young Professionals,” said Laura Vann, Vice President of Cooperative Initiatives for LSCU. “They have embraced the Biz Kid$ program and have demonstrated creative ways for implementing Biz Kid$ in their local communities. LSCU appreciates the grant funding from the National Credit Union Foundation that enabled us to get this financial education program under way in Alabama and Florida.”

Credit union leaders and supporters can now purchase their sponsorships and tickets for the 27th annual National Credit Union Foundation Dinner Presenting the Herb Wegner Memorial Awards. The dinner will take place on March 9, 2015 at the Marriott Marquis in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C.

Denise Gabel, Chief Operating Officer of the Northwest Credit Union Association, will be returning as the evening’s emcee. For the first time in seven years, the dinner has moved locations, this time to the new Marriott Marquis located directly across from the Washington Convention Center.

Duchess of Cornwall Welcomes CUDEs & Praises Credit Unions

Married to Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne, since 2005, Camilla Parker Bowles decided to use the title The Duchess of Cornwall, as her husband is also known as The Duke of Cornwall. According to Marlene Shiels, The Duchess has continued to learn about and promote credit unions in the UK “by undertaking other visits, meeting with credit union leagues, and visiting and joining her local credit union in London. She is now hosting a reception at Clarence House (her royal residence in London) on International Credit Union Day to spread the word.”

Many calendars now list the "national" or "international" nature of each day of the year. Sept. 19, for example, is "International Talk Like a Pirate Day." Ridiculous, you say?

Well, yes. But there is some entertainment value in seeing the startled expression on your coffee barista's face when you exclaim, "Arggghh! Thank ye fer the fine caramel macchiato, matey!"

Since 1948, the third Thursday of October has been celebrated as International Credit Union (ICU) Day®. This year, ICU Day is October 16th. The theme is "Local Service. Global Good." It emphasizes credit unions' positive impact in their communities and around the world.

Brightstar Credit Union Launches Additional Financial Literacy Initiative w/NCUF Biz Kid$ Grant

BrightStar Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in South Florida, is providing financial literacy education to all Broward County middle schools through Biz Kid$, an Emmy Award winning show where kids teach kids about money and business.

All 43 middle schools in Broward County Public Schools, starting with Walter C. Young Middle School in Pembroke Pines as the pilot school, have received DVDs of the Biz Kid$ show and materials. This group includes Beachside Montessori Village and Broward Virtual. BrightStar has made this possible by receiving a $20,000 Biz Kid$ Financial Education Grant, one of only 16 grants awarded nationwide in 2013, from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF). The grants are intended to engage credit unions using the Biz Kid$ program and its curriculum to build financial literacy.

NCUF Grantee Uses Biz Kid$ to Help Students Stand Out in Workforce

Travis Credit Union teamed up with the Fairfield-Suisun Chamber of Commerce, Solano County Office of Education (SCOE), and the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District to create a Work-Ready Certification (WRC) Program to help students stand out in the workforce.

Designed to validate that students have the necessary entry-level skills as identified by the local business and industry community, the WRC Program enables students to be both successful in the workplace and also become contributing citizens of the community, both locally and globally. Travis Credit Union received a Biz Kid$ Financial Education Grant from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) to help fund this initiative.

44 CU Professionals Become CU Development Educators (CUDEs) After Completing “Life-Changing” Program

Forty-four credit union professionals became certified Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs) last week after being guided by eight dedicated program facilitators and mentors through the intensive Credit Union Development Education (DE) Training from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF). The Fall DE training was held September 10-17, 2014 at the Lowell Center on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis.

After attending the Fall DE Training, Laida Garcia, NCUF Chairman and President/CEO of floridacentral Credit Union in Tampa, Fla, said, “NCUF’s DE training was an enriching experience that will stay with me for years to come. While I have 35 years of experience in the credit union industry, my week at DE Training re-kindled my passion and spirit for our cooperative movement and roots.”

NCUF Grantee Helps Elementary Students Save Over $40k

Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU) helped elementary students learn the importance of saving through its innovative program, “The Piggy Bank Project”. At the end of the school year, students at Walter Bracken Elementary saved just over $40,000. SSSCU received a Biz Kid$ Financial Education Grant from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) to help fund this initiative.

The Piggy Bank Project is a collaborative effort between SSSCU, Walter Bracken Elementary School, The United Way of Southern Nevada, Young Philanthropist Society, Junior Achievement, and the Andson Foundation to provide real savings accounts for elementary students, while also providing in class financial

Registration Opens for 2015 Development Education (DE) Trainings

This is the second time in a row that three DE Trainings will be held in a single year, with the first program taking place January in Dallas, Texas followed by trainings in the Spring and Fall in Madison, Wis. Attendees of the National Credit Union Foundation’s (NCUF) six-day total immersion experience will learn about credit unions’ social responsibility and domestic and international development through interactive education and professional networking.

After attending the training earlier this year, Michael Waylett, President of Vision Financial FCU in Durham, N.C, said, “DE training was hands-down the most educational, inspirational, and emotional training or conference I've ever been fortunate enough to be a part of. I learned of the principles on which credit unions were founded and how these principles should remain at the heart of every decision that we make today. It is not possible to attend this training and not, as a human being, be changed significantly."
