Castro, Hampel, Purvis and Mitchell Honored by Foundation

Individuals Recognized at the 30th Annual Wegner Awards Dinner

The National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) presented four Herb Wegner Memorial Awards at its annual dinner Monday night at the Marriott Marquis in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C. Andy Janning, CEO and Founder of Man on Fire Enterprises, served as the night’s emcee.

An astounding group of over 930 credit union leaders and supporters attended the Foundation’s fundraising gala. The awards ceremony celebrated the highest national honors in the credit union movement:
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Angel V. Castro, President of Castro y Asociados;
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Bill Hampel, former Chief Policy Officer for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA);
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Chuck Purvis, President/CEO of Coastal Credit Union; and
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Susan Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates.

“Tonight is an opportune moment to recognize and express appreciation to CUNA, the World Council of Credit Unions, US Peace Corp and the USAID (US Agency International Development) for providing me and many others with opportunities to effectively engage in worldwide credit union advocacy work,” said Castro after accepting his award. “I am truly honored to be here tonight because of these organizations and because of the movement.”

“I’m not quite sure how I belong in the distinguished company of Wegner awardees, but I’m really grateful to be included in the group,” said Hampel after accepting his award. “This is a great honor that I’m really proud of.”

“I attended my first Herb Wegner Dinner in 1993, and I have not missed one since,” said Purvis after accepting his award. “To receive the Herb Wegner Award is the highest honor one can receive in our movement. To be added to the list of 92 individuals and organizations who have received this award is beyond anything I ever imagined when I began my credit union career in 1981.”

“Relevance requires us to stand together united for the common good,” said Mitchell after accepting her award. “Stand up for diversity! Stand up for what’s right. Stand up for what you believe in. This is not my lifetime achievement, it’s a renewed challenge to me and all of us to stand up for the credit union purpose.”

This year’s winners joined an elite group of 64 individuals and 28 organizations whose efforts over the past 30 years have earned them the recognition of Herb Wegner Memorial Awards.
