Registration Opens Nationwide for Social Impact Management Institute March 24 in Monterey, Calif.
The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) will co-host its second Social Impact Management Institute on March 24 as a pre-conference event for the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ Big Valley Educational Conference. The full-day Institute features world-class speakers and a unique training agenda designed to help credit unions grow while making a social impact.
Registration is now open on the California Credit Union League conference website (http://www.ccul.org/bv2007/reg_instructs1.cfm).

Carolinas Credit Union Foundation Chairman Mark Twisdale Elected to National Credit Union Foundation Board
Carolinas Credit Union Foundation Chairman Mark Twisdale has been elected to a three-year term on the board of the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF). Twisdale, who serves as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for State Employees Credit Union (SECU) in Raleigh, N.C., is also the Executive Director of the SECU Foundation.
Twisdale’s election by the NCUF Board was unanimous.
“While we had an outstanding field of highly qualified candidates,” related NCUF Chairman Mary Cunningham, “our board members agreed that Mark will bring valuable fundraising expertise and local foundation perspectives to the NCUF Board. The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has generated the highest state contributions to the Community Investment Fund by using a very effective model of chapter-based fundraising throughout North and South Carolina. And the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation has used creative member-driven fundraising to build assets of $14 million.”

National Credit Union Foundation Helps Launch Hispanic Savings Campaign through New Network of Latino CUs
The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) is granting $25,000 to the newly formed Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP) to launch a national savings campaign for Hispanics.
“Hispanic America Saves” will be an affiliate of the Consumer Federation of America’s “America Saves” campaign. It will be modeled after the “El Paso Saves” program that the NCUF-funded El Paso Affordable Housing Credit Union Service Organization has been facilitating for two years.
Hispanic America Saves will aim to enroll Latino/Hispanic households in savings programs as incentives to become credit union members.

National Credit Union Foundation Schedules Two Development Education Classes in 2007
For the first time in 10 years, the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) is scheduling two Development Education (DE) Training classes in 2007.
Registration is open now for DE Training on April 12-17 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. (Click the Register for DE Training button at left.)
Registration will open in May for a unique DE Training on August 23-28 on Bainbridge Island, Wash. This first-of-its-kind DE class will be set at IslandWood, a site designed to use the environment as a classroom.

REAL Solutions Becomes Signature Program of National Credit Union Foundation
To further credit unions’ efforts to serve low-wealth and modest means households, the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) today officially begins the national expansion of REAL Solutions as its signature program.
Over the next three years as a program of the Foundation, REAL Solutions is projected to help more than 2,000 credit unions in 33 states offer new products and services to attract more than 250,000 members from these largely untapped and underserved markets.

Barry Jolette to Receive National Credit Union Foundation’s Wegner Award for Lifetime Achievement
The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) will bestow the Herb Wegner Award for Lifetime Achievement upon Barry Jolette, President and CEO of San Mateo Credit Union in Redwood City, Calif.

National Credit Union Foundation Supports Arizona Saves
The Arizona Credit Union Foundation was recently recognized for its support of Arizona Saves, a nonprofit organization that provides financial education, financial coaching and access to no-fee savings accounts to all Arizonans, particularly low- to moderate-income households, individuals and children.
The Arizona Credit Union Foundation (ACUF) and the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) were both recognized with plaques for their financial contributions to Arizona Saves during 2006. Kris Hoffman Ackley, NCUF Director of Donor Relations also presented Arizona Saves a check for $15,000 in support of their 2007 programs.

 Shareholders in the Community Investment Fund (CIF) now have the opportunity to triple their dividends while securing a full federal guarantee for the next two years.
The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) will guarantee all principal and quarterly fixed-rate dividend payments on new two-year certificates of deposit (CDs) in CIF.
CIF allows members of corporate credit unions to earn dividends while donating to credit union charitable organizations – without creating an expense on the donors’ balance sheets.
New deposits in CIF will help reduce all credit unions’ expenses for NCUA’s Corporate Stabilization Program. |

 Surpassing the goal to reach 33 states by year-end 2009, REAL Solutions – the signature program of the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) – is now reaching 34 states and 1,200 credit unions.
In the first four months of 2009, four more states agreed to offer REAL Solutions: Georgia Idaho Pennsylvania Vermont
At the same time, NCUF is providing “virtual solutions” accessible to credit unions in every state.
The online REAL Solutions Impact Center (www.realsolutions.coop) features new toolkits, podcasts, monographs, blogs, and many other resources to help credit unions offer sustainable products and services that have proven effective reaching members with low wealth.

Payday Lending: A REAL Solutions Implementation Guide is available for free download on the REAL Solutions Impact Center at www.realsolutions.coop.
The 121-page toolkit is designed to be comprehensive, yet easy to use.
“Our Payday Lending Implementation Guide is intended to develop solutions that are appropriate for each individual credit union and its membership,” explains author Nancy Pierce, Ph.D., president of Tipton Research Group and a field coach for the National Credit Union Foundation's signature program, REAL Solutions.
“It’s not a one-size-fits-all toolkit; several turn-key products are featured as examples. Ten credit union models were selected to offer a broad array of loan features, pricing structures, and underwriting criteria.”
Successful models are presented with sample procedures and marketing materials, collection techniques, and time-tested loan results.
The toolkit also includes interactive Excel worksheets to help each credit union make its own pricing decisions on open-end loans as well as closed-end loans. |

 A recent CUTimes.com poll shows an urgent need for Development Education (DE) training on the competitive advantages of the credit union charter. Poll results revealed that as many as 47% of online voters are considering bank charters:
“40% said their credit union is looking at converting to a mutual savings bank.” “7% are looking at either merging or a mutual savings bank conversion.” “Anyone concerned about the viability of the credit union charter needs to go to DE training,” emphasizes National Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Steve Delfin. “Development Educators learn to fully take advantage of their current charter. They discover a value proposition that credit unions can leverage right now.”
