States and the Community Investment Fund


As direct partners in the Community Investment Fund (CIF), leagues and state credit union foundations continue to play a critical role in how the National Credit Union Foundation funds local development initiatives, including small credit union support, education of credit union staff and volunteers and consumer financial literacy programs.

The following highlights show some of the many initiatives funded with CIF funds by our state partners. For additional details, please contact each state directly.

Arizona (2008)

Helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV... Supported statewide implementation of REAL Solutions®... Supported Junior Achievement's Economics for Success program in an inner-city school to teaach students life skills and work force readiness.

California & Nevada (2008)

The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation supported interactive financial education for low-income youth… Partnered with the California Nevada Youth Involvement Network on the USA Today Education program… Sponsored the California Jump$tart Coalition’s Summit of Financial Literacy… Also sponsored a multilingual financial literacy project by San Francisco credit unions in partnership with the SF Unified School District...

The California and Nevada Credit Union League’s Shapiro Group provided small CUs with technology grants, an e-mail listserv, and a specialized newsletter.

Colorado (2008)

With CIF funding, the Colorado Foundation helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV… Supported Foolproof financial education modules and outreach program for a county school district, and financial curriculum development for the University of Northern Colorado… Provided small CUs with grants for equipment, security systems, technology upgrades, and disaster recovery planning.

Connecticut (2008)

The Connecticut Credit Union Association created the Connecticut Credit Union Solution Foundation to focus on REAL Solutions®, scholarships, community service grants, small CU assistance, financial literacy, and international partnerships. Strengthened the partnership between Connecticut and the Cooperative Credit Union League of Trinidad and Tobago… Facilitated two new credit union-to-credit union partnerships to foster relationships and understanding between cultures.

Florida (2008)

The Florida Credit Union Foundation used their CIF income to helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV… Supported statewide implementation of REAL Solutions®... Grew the scholarship program for Florida high school students to attend in-state universities or community colleges.

Georgia (2008)

The Georgia Foundation funded operational assistance and educational consulting for 90 small CUs… Helped the Georgia-Poland partnership continue to flourish in its 13th year.

Idaho (2008)

Funded scholarships for CU staff and volunteers to attend league- and CUNA-sponsored events.

Illinois (2008)

CIF funds enabled the Illinois Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) to provided small CUs with grants to purchase office equipment, computer hardware and software… Assisted small CUs in marketing and web site development... Facilitated Bank Secrecy Act compliance sessions.

Indiana (2008)

Underwrote local programming costs for the Biz Kid$ series on seven PBS-TV stations throughout Indiana… Supported statewide implementation of REAL Solutions®… Supported the National Endowment for Financial Education’s high school financial training for teachers... Provided flood relief grants for three CUs.

Iowa (2008)

Funded professional education scholarships for CU staff... Helped fund the Iowa Jump$tart Coalition.

Kansas (2008)

The Kansas Credit Union Association (KCUA) used grants to send seventh and eighth graders to MoneySmart financial education camps... Adopted REAL Solutions® to help 15 credit unions provide payday lending alternatives.

Kentucky (2008)

The Kentucky Credit Union League uses CIF funds to helped fund the Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition… Assisted small CUs with policy writing and strategic planning.

Louisiana (2008)

Funded educational opportunities for CU staff and volunteers in asset/liability management, member service, and board training.

Maryland & District of Columbia (2008)

Funded two programs for emerging CUs – Growth, Governance & Services, and a Faith-Based Initiative – to foster growth in small CUs by providing training, risk management, product support, and member surveys.

Massachussetts (2008)

Supported an affordable housing partnership with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless… Supported statewide implementation of REAL Solutions®.

Michigan (2008)

Funded training scholarships for staff and volunteers of CUs under $35 million in assets.

Minnesota (2008)

Offset the expenses of Minnesota’s Small Credit Union Conference, which allowed for a low registration fee.

Missouri (2008)

Funded scholarships enabling CU staff and volunteers to attend training and conferences.

Montana (2008)

Montana Credit Unions for Community Development (MCUCD) used CIF funds to helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV… Allocated funds for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance… Developed and maintained the www.montanafreefile.org website, served as the statewide VITA project’s fiscal agent, produced outreach materials, and coordinated production and distribution of public service announcements.

Nebraska (2008)

Provided CU members with free education sessions on a series of consumer finance topics.

New Hampshire (2008)

Partnered with America’s Credit Union Museum to produce seven CU 4 Reality Fairs for students.

New Jersey (2008)

Made a grant to the New Jersey Coalition for Financial Literacy, which allowed 12 CUs to host two financial education sessions for members… Initiated a program with 12 CUs under $20 million in assets to overcome issues that were hindering their success.

New Mexico (2008)

Funded scholarships enabling CU staff and volunteers to attend education sessions.

New York (2008)

Funded financial literacy solutions presentations and exhibits for teachers at four conferences across the state… Helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV… Enabled 17 CUs to distribute 7,500 Kid’s Cash Kits.

North & South Carolina (2008)

Carolinas CU Foundation representatives present a check to the Girl Scouts of Eastern SC.North and South Carolina share distributed CIF funds through the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation (CCUF). Micro-community grants helped young people throughout the Carolinas… For example: Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital bought mobile game systems for patients who are unable to leave their rooms, plus bilingual games… Children’s Attention Home bought clothing, duffle bags, and other necessities for foster care kids in residence… The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina is renovating a center to provide a play area, kitchen, and counseling room… A South Carolina Girl Scout camp bought two new docks, two kayaks and paddle boats, plus 24 personal floatation devices. North Dakota & South Dakota (2008)

Donated disaster relief assistance for victims of California wildfires… Supported financial education in the classroom through Junior Achievement… Financed a project with Consumer Credit Counseling Services.

Ohio (2008)

Western Credit Union’s Maria Gonzalez’s financial advice shows on Hispanic radio.Helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series airing on all nine of Ohio’s PBS-TV stations… Partnered with a PBS-TV affiliate to produce a two-hour mortgage foreclosure special viewed throughout Northwest Ohio… Funded a grant writer’s effort to seek funds for a new Latino CU in South Toledo.

Oklahoma (2008)

Made training grants to small CU staff and volunteers… Helped two small CUs purchase equipment and upgrade software… Funded consumer counseling services.

Oregon (2008)

Helped underwrite the Biz Kid$ series on PBS-TV… Made training grants to small CU staff and volunteers.

Pennsylvania (2008)

Implemented strategic planning projects for seven small CUs.

Rhode Island (2008)

Supported statewide implementation of REAL Solutions®… Supported shared branching for small CUs… Funded CU 4 Reality Fairs for students.

Tennessee (2008)

Helped 20 CUs buy fraud detection devices intended to eliminate fraud losses… Helped three small CUs replace outdated computer equipment… Waived registrations for CU staff and volunteers to attend training.

Texas (2008)

Produced a free training video on Serving Your Hispanic Market, a white paper on Texas’ Hispanic population, and a webcast on Identifying the Opportunity Usage of Financial Services by Latinos… Helped new CUs, small CUs, and community development CUs purchase equipment, update software, and conduct annual audits and planning sessions.

Utah (2008)

Provided small CUs with two asset/liability management seminars, additional staff training, and one-year subscriptions to an online compliance policy tool.

Vermont (2008)

Donated earthquake relief funds to help Vermont’s partner CUs in Peru.

Virginia (2008)

Provided financial resources and staff time to roll out a new high school financial education curriculum through the National Endowment for Financial Education… Sponsored the Virginia Jump$tart Coalition’s Financial Literacy Summit… Granted three scholarships to the National Youth Involvement Board Conference… Supported workshops for teachers through contributions to the Virginia Council on Economic Education.

Washington (2008)

Biz Kid$ DVD cover artThe Washington Credit Union Foundation is the project manager of the Biz Kid$ series, providing financial education to more than 230 million Americans.

West Virginia (2008)

Enabled a community CU to purchase and distribute Brass magazine to local high school students.

Wisconsin (2008)

Supported a 12-week wealth accumulation program conducted by a University of Wisconsin professor on behalf of STAR Credit Union, which is run by high school students in the Dane County Boys and Girls Club.

Wyoming (2008)

Provided training scholarships to small CU staff… Made a grant enabling a small low-income CU to finance construction of a separate space for a loan officer/teller station.
