About Us

The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) is the charitable arm of the US credit union movement and works as a catalyst to improve people’s financial lives through credit unions. Through NCUF grants and programs, credit unions provide widespread financial education, create greater access to affordable financial services, and empower more consumers to save, build assets, and own homes. Donations to the Foundation enable credit unions to help their members reach life-changing goals and achieve financial freedom.

The Foundation also works to respond to immediate and unanticipated needs. NCUF served as the movement's focal point for disaster relief contributions supporting credit unions and their employees devastated by Hurricane Katrina. To raise funds for other major disasters affecting credit unions and their people, the Foundation developed CU Aid, the first online disaster relief fundraising system for credit unions.

With support from credit unions and friends of the movement, the Foundation works day in and day out to make a real impact in our communities with the philosophy of "People Helping People."

A Bit of Background

Chartered as the CUNA Foundation in 1980, we served as a standard trade association foundation for our first decade. In 1991, the Foundation reorganized to become a true charitable foundation focused on the needs of consumers and credit unions’ unique ability to meet those needs.

Today, the National Credit Union Foundation remains closely aligned with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). As one of its affiliates, we are widely recognized as the national charitable arm of America's credit union movement.

Our Supporters

None of the Foundation’s work would be possible without our supporters:
  • Credit unions who invest in the Community Investment Fund;
  • Sponsors who help underwrite our operations;
  • State credit union leagues and foundations, the Credit Union National Association, and the Corporate Credit Union Network, who make significant donations and encourage others to follow their lead;
  • Individual credit union leaders including the NCUF Board members who are committed to helping credit unions and the communities they serve.

Tax Status

The National Credit Union Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of executives from the credit union movement as well as an at-large representative. Financial contributions to NCUF are deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Please consult with your tax professional for specific guidelines.
